Podere Le Ripi is the biodynamic estate founded in Montalcino by Francesco Illy, with vineyards at Castelnuovo dell'Abate and in the western part of the appellation. Alongside its Brunellos it makes a few unconventional reds, such as this Amore e Follia (Love and Madness), whose name already says a lot about the spirit of the house.
It is an equal blend of Syrah and Sangiovese from estate vineyards. After around 25 days' maceration in open wooden vats, the wine ages for about fifteen months in concrete, with no barrique: a choice that keeps fruit and spice in the foreground.
2019, a balanced vintage in Tuscany, produced a full, juicy red: plum, black cherry, blackberry, pepper, leather and a hint of coffee, with firm but ripe tannins. With grilled meat, game, pici with white ragù or aged pecorino.
