Podere Le Ripi is the estate founded in Montalcino in 1997 by Francesco Illy, of the famous Trieste coffee family. More than fifty hectares of vines, woods, olive groves and pasture, farmed with Demeter-certified biodynamics, and a winery that is a manifesto in itself: the Golden Cellar, built on the golden ratio.
Cielo d'Ulisse comes from the western slope of Montalcino, a cool area surrounded by forest, on soils ranging from marl to alberese limestone. It ferments for about twenty days in large open wooden vats and ages for almost three years in cask, followed by a few months in concrete before bottling.
2019 is one of the most balanced Montalcino vintages of the past decade, with ripe fruit and intact acidity. The wine is bright and multi-layered: cherry, blood orange, Mediterranean herbs and fine yet firm tannins. An individual, off-the-beaten-track Brunello, to try with pigeon, wild boar or pecorino di fossa.
