Bartolo Mascarello is one of Barolo's hallowed names: the family cellar in the centre of the village, the traditional style Bartolo defended against the barrique fashion, and which his daughter Maria Teresa carries on today. Few bottles, highly sought after, and no shortcuts.
The Langhe Nebbiolo comes from the same vineyards that produce the Barolo, mainly from the younger vines, and is made in the same way: long macerations in concrete vats and ageing in large oak casks. The result is a Nebbiolo more approachable than the Barolo but with the same classic imprint.
2018 is a fresh vintage with clear-cut aromatics. In the glass rose, small red berries, blood orange, spice and fine yet firm tannins. For many enthusiasts it is the most accessible way into the Mascarello style, with the quality of a small Barolo. With agnolotti, tajarin with ragù, roast white meats or Piedmontese salumi.
