Solaia is one of Antinori's most important wines: it comes from the vineyard of the same name, next to the Tignanello vineyard on the Santa Cristina estate in Chianti Classico, and the first vintage was 1978. It is usually a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc with a small share of Sangiovese.
2002 was a rainy, difficult vintage in Tuscany, and Antinori chose to make Solaia without Sangiovese, using only the two Cabernets. To underline the difference it was labelled "Annata Diversa" (a different vintage): today it is a small collector's curiosity.
After more than twenty years the wine is evolved and mature: dark fruit, bell pepper, tobacco, spice and now-supple tannins. A rare bottle to open slowly, with red meat or aged cheeses.
