Tignanello is the red with which Piero Antinori, starting with the 1970 vintage, changed Tuscan wine: one of the first Chianti Classico reds without white grapes and the first Sangiovese aged in barriques, the forefather of the Super Tuscans. It comes from the estate of the same name between the Greve and Pesa valleys.
Sangiovese is completed by a small share of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, from vineyards on limestone and galestro soils. In 2009 the wine aged for about 16-18 months in French and Hungarian oak, followed by a period in bottle.
2009 brought a cold, rainy winter, a hot and dry August and a late season with wide day-night temperature swings, which gave balance and aromatics. Today the wine shows a complete evolution: ripe cherry and violet give way to liquorice, tobacco, cocoa and earthy notes, with soft tannins and good savouriness. Ideal with red meat, roasts and aged cheeses; a fine chance to drink a Tignanello already at maturity.
