For many, Giacomo Conterno is the ultimate benchmark of traditional Barolo, today run by Roberto Conterno. In 1974 his father Giovanni bought Cascina Francia in Serralunga d'Alba, a single block of vines that yields both this Barolo and, in the finest years, the legendary Monfortino.
Francia lies on the well-exposed calcareous soils typical of the Serralunga side, which give Nebbiolo of great structure. Nothing superfluous in the cellar: fermentation with a maceration of a few weeks, then long ageing, around four years, in large oak casks before bottling.
2020 was a warm but balanced vintage that produced harmonious Barolos with generous fruit. Here it shows as cherry, rose, tar and spice, carried by the majestic tannins of Serralunga. It is one of the Barolos most sought after by collectors worldwide: a wine for the cellar, worth waiting for, to serve with braised meats, game and great aged cheeses.
