Few labels embody classic Barolo like those of Giacomo Conterno. The Monforte d'Alba winery, now in the hands of Roberto Conterno, makes its Barolo Francia from the vineyard of the same name in Serralunga d'Alba, bought by the family in 1974: the same site that, only in exceptional years, gives Monfortino.
The Nebbiolo grows on the calcareous soils of Serralunga, which produce deep, austere wines. Traditional vinification with a maceration of a few weeks, then about four years in large oak casks: long timescales, no shortcuts, for a wine built to last for decades.
2021 is regarded as a great classic vintage, with a dry season, steady ripening and excellent acidity. The result is a Francia of structure and tension: cherry, rose, tar, medicinal herbs and imposing yet fine tannins. Very young today and best forgotten in the cellar for a while; then with braised meats, game and aged cheeses.
At a glance: Nebbiolo 100% · 14.5% ABV · 0.75 l · Giacomo Conterno, Serralunga d'Alba (Barolo)
