Cascina Fontana is Mario Fontana's small estate at Perno, a hamlet of Monforte d'Alba, heir to a family of growers present in the Langhe for six generations. Mario has made wine from his own grapes since the mid-1990s in a style he describes as "come una volta", the old way: a few hectares, few bottles, no concessions to fashion.
This Barolo bears the name of the commune of Castiglione Falletto on the label, at the heart of the appellation, where calcareous marl and sandstone give Barolos that combine structure and elegance. In the cellar, long but not extreme macerations and ageing in large Slavonian oak casks, with no unnecessary filtration.
2016 is one of the great classic vintages, fresh and balanced, perfect for the balance typical of Castiglione Falletto. In the glass, rose, liquorice, red fruit and serious tannins, with a depth that opens up over time. For braised meats, game and aged cheeses.
