Pian delle Vigne is Antinori's estate in Montalcino, acquired in the mid-1990s. It takes its name from the old railway station within the property, on the line that runs through the valley, and has become one of the benchmarks for classic-style Brunello among the great Tuscan houses.
The Brunello is pure Sangiovese from the estate's vineyards. After fermentation the wine ages at length in large oak casks, as tradition requires, and then in bottle before release.
2004 is one of the finest vintages of the decade in Montalcino, balanced and long-lived. More than twenty years after the harvest the wine is fully mature: cherries in spirit, dried fruit, leather, tobacco, forest floor and spice, with melted tannins and good freshness. An evolved Brunello for lovers of tertiary notes, to serve with game, slow-cooked stews, truffles or aged cheeses.
