Tenuta Nuova is the Brunello that made Casanova di Neri famous, the winery founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri and now run by his son Giacomo. The first vintage was 1993: to celebrate this wine's twentieth anniversary, the 2013 was released with a special gold label, now sought after by collectors.
The vineyards are at Le Cetine, near Sant'Angelo in Colle on the southern side of Montalcino: a hill never planted to vines before, between 275 and 320 metres, on galestro with pockets of tufa and clay and exposures from south-east to south-west. The wine spends a long time in wood before release.
2013 was a cool, late-ripening vintage in a classic mould, giving Brunellos that are more sleek than powerful. In the glass cherry, red berries, spice and balsamic notes, with dense yet polished tannins and a taut palate. With roasts, game, bistecca alla fiorentina and aged pecorino.
At a glance: Sangiovese grosso 100% · 14.5% ABV · 0.75 l · Casanova di Neri, Montalcino (SI)
