Capannelle was born in 1974, when Raffaele Rossetti bought a 16th-century villa with a few hectares of land at Gaiole in Chianti; since 1997 it has belonged to the family of James Sherwood, founder of Orient-Express Hotels. Solare was conceived in 1990 together with Giorgio Pinchiorri, owner of Florence's Enoteca Pinchiorri, and first released in 1996.
It is a blend of Sangiovese and Malvasia Nera, a traditional Chianti pairing, fermented in conical oak vats and then aged for about eighteen months in French oak barriques. A Super Tuscan made entirely from native grapes, built to last.
2016 is regarded as one of the most balanced vintages of the past decade in Chianti: Solare comes out elegant and deep, with cherry, violet, spice and forest floor, fine tannins and a lively acidity that promises longevity. With red meat roasts, game, pappardelle with wild boar and aged pecorino.
