Born in the early 1970s from an intuition of Piero Antinori, Tignanello was the first Sangiovese aged in barriques and the first modern Tuscan red blended with Cabernet. Stepping outside the Chianti rules of the time, it paved the way for all the Super Tuscans and is still one of the best-known Italian reds in the world.
It comes from the Tignanello vineyard on the Tignanello estate at San Casciano in Val di Pesa, in Chianti Classico, on limestone soils. Sangiovese is joined by small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc; the wine matures for about 15 months in French and Hungarian oak and then another year in bottle.
2020 brought a mild winter, a hot summer and some welcome September rain that allowed full ripening. The wine is juicy and precise: cherry, berries, sweet spice, a touch of tobacco and fine tannins. Lovely to drink now or to lay down. With roasts, sliced steak and aged cheeses.
