Burlotto is one of the historic wineries of Verduno: founded in 1850 by Commendatore Giovan Battista Burlotto, it was a supplier to the Royal House of Savoy and is now run by Fabio Alessandria, who has made it one of the most sought-after names in classic Barolo, starting with the famous Monvigliero.
The straight Barolo is a blend of several Verduno vineyards and a manifesto of the house style: hand harvesting, fermentation with native yeasts in open wooden vats, ageing partly in small wood and mostly in large casks, then a period in bottle. Classicism, restraint, balance.
2015, a warm and sunny vintage, produced a Barolo softer and more open than usual, but with Verduno's typical finesse: cherry, rose and violet, herbs, white pepper, a note of leather and tobacco, fine tannins and a savoury finish. An accessible way into the world of a cult producer. With tajarin in meat ragù, braised beef or aged cheeses.
