The Germano family has grown vines in Serralunga d'Alba since 1856, but only began bottling in 1987 under Ettore; today the estate is run by his son Sergio, one of the village's most admired growers. Lazzarito is one of the historic crus of Serralunga, the village that gives the most structured and long-lived Barolos.
The vineyard, at around 320 metres facing south-west on calcareous marl, was planted in 1931. After a very long maceration the wine ages for 36 months in large casks, then rests at length in bottle before release.
2007 was a warm, early vintage that produced generous, open Barolos. More than fifteen years on, the wine is fully into its tertiary phase: ripe red fruit, dark spice, liquorice, tobacco, leather and tar, with Serralunga's tannins now softened. A mature Barolo to open a few hours ahead. With braised beef, game, truffle or long-aged cheeses.
