Luce was born from the meeting of two great wine families: the Frescobaldis and Robert Mondavi, who joined forces in Montalcino in the mid-1990s (the first vintage was 1993). The idea was revolutionary at the time: pairing Merlot with Sangiovese to create the first great blend of the two in Brunello country. Today the estate belongs entirely to the Frescobaldi family.
The vineyards lie on the south-western slopes of the Montalcino hill, in a secluded, heavily wooded area. Sangiovese brings structure and acidity, Merlot roundness and flesh; the wine then ages at length in barriques before bottling.
2000 was a hot vintage in Tuscany, and after more than twenty years this Luce is fully in its tertiary phase: ripe fruit gives way to dried plum, tobacco, leather, cocoa and spice, with tannins softened by time. A collector's bottle, to be opened with care and served with braised meats, game or long-aged cheeses.
At a glance: Sangiovese 50%, Merlot 50% · 14.5% ABV · 0.75 l · Frescobaldi, Montalcino
