Montevertine is a small estate in Radda in Chianti that Sergio Manetti turned into an absolute benchmark for Sangiovese. Le Pergole Torte, first made in 1977, was the area's first pure Sangiovese, at a time when Chianti rules still called for white grapes in the blend; today it is made by his son Martino, with the famous artist labels that accompany every vintage.
The name means the twisted pergolas, recalling the vineyard's old training system. The grapes ferment in concrete with a maceration of around twenty-five days; the wine matures for twelve months in Allier barriques and twelve in Slavonian oak casks, then a few months in bottle.
2021, marked by a spring frost and a dry summer, gave small quantities of very concentrated fruit. In the glass: cherry, violet, orange peel, spice and dense, precise tannins, with a depth that asks for time. It is one of Italy's benchmark Sangioveses, alongside the greats of Montalcino. With roasts, game and aged cheeses.
