Lamaione is the Frescobaldi family's pure Merlot, grown at CastelGiocondo, their Montalcino estate best known for Brunello. The first Merlot vines were planted here in the 1970s on soil unusual for the area: deep clay, perfectly suited to the variety.
The vineyard sits at around 300 metres on marine clays. After hand-sorting of the berries, the wine ferments in steel and then ages for about two years in French oak barriques, mostly new, followed by further bottle ageing before release.
2016, one of the finest Tuscan vintages in decades, produced a full, well-balanced Lamaione: berries, ripe cherry, cocoa, coffee and dense yet velvety tannins. A top-tier Tuscan Merlot that stands comparison with the region's great international-style reds. With steak, game and aged cheeses.
