Santo Spirito 11 is the fortified wine of the Marchesi Frescobaldi, the Florentine family that has been making wine in Tuscany for more than seven hundred years. It is a non-vintage wine, made for the end of a meal and for sipping on its own, in the tradition of Tuscany's sweet wines.
It comes from Trebbiano and Malvasia, the traditional white grapes of Tuscany. Fermentation is stopped to keep part of the grapes' natural sweetness, then the wine ages in small wooden vessels, which give it its amber colour and oxidative notes.
Amber yellow in the glass, with aromas of honey, dried fruit, raisins and sweet spice; the palate is warm, smooth and long, with restrained sweetness. Serve lightly chilled with cantucci, fruit tarts, biscuits and aged cheeses. At this price, a bottle worth always keeping at home to round off dinner.
